A recent call by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change for evidence to support a new gas-fired power generation strategy has re-emphasised the case for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), according to Geoff Chapman, chairman of the Carbon Capture and Storage Cost Reduction Task Force. But with the UK government having exempted new-build combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) from the need to be fitted with CCS for 30 years, Chapman labelled the drive to decarbonise the power sector by 2030 as “contradictory”.
