China will increase natural gas imports from central Asia by around 50% versus last year, importing visual_editor3-visual_editor5 Bcm of gas in visual_editor01visual_editor versus 15.9 Bcm in visual_editor011, the chairman of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) said at a conference in Beijing on Wednesday. Jiang Jiemin also told reporters that the construction of a third cross-country gas pipeline was expected to begin this year and be completed in two to three years, with high import costs putting undue strain on PetroChina's finances.
