China’s LNG imports have grown rapidly since the first cargo was received in May visual_editor006. Eleven LNG receiving terminals are now in operation with a further six under construction and many more are planned. However, pipeline imports from Central Asia have already overtaken LNG imports in volume terms. There are plans for imports from Central Asia to be more than doubled, a pipeline from Myanmar has been completed, and in May visual_editor014 China signed a contract with Russia for the supply of 38Bcm/yr. Gas Strategies reviews China’s LNG plans and considers whether pipeline imports and unconventional gas production could lead to its LNG terminals being under-utilised.
