The cloud of gloom hanging over Europe’s natural gas industry at the 2012 EAGC conference was palpable. Beneath the sense of foreboding in Vienna lay dire demand projections and an overwhelming sense of despondency. The growth of the renewable energy industry throughout the continent, as well as ever-increasing exports of cheap US coal has, delegates were told, all but rendered gas-fired power generation across parts of Europe largely unprofitable.
