Europe has three traditional gas supply corridors: North Sea gas from the north, Russian gas from the east and North African gas from the south. A decade ago the prospects for increased North African – AKA 'Third Corridor' – gas supply were bright. Algeria was planning a further expansion in exports, major oil companies were falling over each other to do gas exploration deals in Libya, and Egypt was commissioning two major LNG export plants, with additional trains mooted. But since then, the fortunes of North African gas have suffered a variety of reversals. Gas Strategies examines the regional outlook, promise and pitfalls, and asks whether North Africa's importance as a supplier to Europe will continue to decline – or whether there is hope for a return to former glories.
