The rise of battery storage as an enabler of ‘dispatchable’ renewable power generation is unlikely to challenge the growth of natural gas until after 2035, BP chief economist Spencer Dale told Gas Matters Today.
Cost constraints will limit roll-out of batteries, which will in turn limit the potential for wind and solar plants to undermine the ascent of gas as a transition fuel in a low-carbon energy sector, he said in an online event on Wednesday afternoon.
