Carbon capture and storage (CCS) could encourage the construction of new gas-fired power plants and play an ‘absolutely central role’ in tackling climate change, according to an independent report commissioned by the UK government.
The economic benefits of the technology would more than offset development costs and an equipped gas-fired plant could deliver cheaper electricity than the proposed Hinkley Point nuclear project, the reported entitled “Lowest cost decarbonisation for the UK: The critical role of CCS” suggested.
