Tesla Motors, the US automotive and energy storage company, has won a contract to provide a 20 MW battery system in southern California following a competitive tender in which it was the only bidder.
The tender process comes four months after regulators ordered local power supplier Southern California Edison to invest in utility-scale battery networks after a leak at the Aliso Canyon underground gas storage field began last October, gradually discharging an estimated 100,000 mt of methane and displacing around 8,000 families.
