The use of LNG as marine fuel in the Baltic Sea region has seen little increase since January 2015, when the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) imposed stricter controls on airborne emissions from ships operating in the region. Despite this, major Baltic ports have in the past few months announced plans for new bunkering facilities, FSRU operators have said they are considering their options for offering marine bunkering, while a small amount of shipowners are reported to be ordering new LNG-fuelled ships. At first sight, LNG bunkering in Northern Europe seems to have a long way to go, but could these recent developments point towards it finally taking off at some point in the future?
