Gas-fired and renewable power plants are expected to form the bulk of installed generation capacity in South Africa by 2050, but coal and nuclear could still account for most of the power mix despite no new reactors coming online until the late 2030s, the country’s energy ministry said this week.
According to a presentation published this week, the ministry’s base case scenario for new-build plants over the next three and a half decades in the country rising to roughly 130 GW by 2050, with capacity split between wind, solar and other renewables (43%), OCGTs and CCGTs (27%), nuclear (16%), coal (12%) and other sources (2%).
