Groningen, one of the oldest gas fields in Europe, has supplied the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with natural gas for decades. But in a matter of just a few years public opinion has turned against Groningen, once the main source for all Dutch gas, in response to earthquakes caused by gas extraction at the site. Following a government-imposed production cap, output from the field has fallen by more than 40% in three years, raising questions over local security of supply and Holland's future role as a gas supplier. Gas Matters spoke to Gertjan Lankhorst, outgoing CEO of GasTerra – the largest gas supplier in the EU – to gauge his views on the evolution of the Dutch market.
