Like many islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica relies heavily on imported energy. Over 90% of its electricity is produced from heavy fuel oil, which not only affects the environment, but also carries a heavy price tag. Jamaica has had ambitious plans for LNG imports over the last decade, but has not been able to implement those plans for various reasons. The latest scheme, centred around a floating storage unit, is more modest in scale.
