UK major BP has taken an initial step toward creating a possible “new LNG hub” in west Africa by agreeing to buy a 62% stake in an offshore development in Mauritania and a 32% interest in a pair of licences in Senegal from US-based Kosmos Energy, BP said this week.
The roughly 30,000 sp km area contains around 50 Tcf of gas resources and more than 1 billion barrels of liquids, Kosmos has estimated. The acquisition is due to close in March 2017, subject to government approvals.
