Despite being unable to sway public opinion in favour of hydraulic fracturing, UK gas industry players like IGas, Cuadrilla and Third Energy have made some progress towards shale exploration in England. Both Scotland and Wales have kept their moratorium on the practice.
Substantial amounts of shale gas are estimated to be trapped in underground rocks and the British government believes it can be exploited to help offset declining North Sea oil and gas output.
