Unparalleled volumes of new LNG production are going to hit the market in 2017 and, without a doubt, the overarching question at the World LNG Summit this month in Barcelona was: where will new demand come from? Despite the uncertainty, delegates at the event were positive. Long-term sales contracts remain difficult to seal, development costs are still high and new liquefaction projects find it hard to take a final investment decision (FID). But sellers are reaping the benefits, as floating storage and regas technology – a concept many had dismissed a few years ago – open new markets. As the new year approaches, bringing a potential 32 mt of additional supply, many speakers encouraged the industry to embrace innovation.
