The Kingdom of Jordan joined the ranks of LNG importers in 2015, when the 160,000 cm floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Golar Eskimo, docked in the Red Sea port of Aqaba, began commercial operations. Previously reliant on Egypt for its gas, Jordan’s pipeline imports from its Middle Eastern neighbour dwindled earlier this decade as Egypt began dealing with gas shortages. Jordan had to switch to oil for its power generation, leading to a hike in the country’s spending on energy. The rapid growth in Jordan’s energy demand, allied to a swelling of its population in recent years, prompted the Jordanian government to seek a FSRU solution, which now lies at the core of the country’s energy transition. LNG Business Review spoke to Amani Al-Azzam, secretary general of Jordan’s ministry of energy and mineral resources, about the country’s path to LNG and its future role in Jordan’s energy share.
