Groningen, the crown jewel of the Dutch gas industry and for decades Europe’s lifeline during peak demand periods, has turned pariah for local residents affected by its production-related earthquakes. Despite repeated government measures to reduce the low-calorific gas field’s annual quotas – from an unchecked 54 Bcm of production in 2013 to 42.5 Bcm in 2014, 27 Bcm in 2015 and 24 Bcm in 2016 – public discontent remains unabated.
