Coal-to-gas switching played a key role in keeping global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions flat for a third consecutive year in 2016 despite strong global economic growth, the International Energy Administration said this week.
Total CO2 emissions from the energy sector stood at 32.1 gigatonnes in 2016, unchanged from the previous two years, with the largest emissions declines coming from the world’s two largest emitters the US and China.
