Japan has started a second subsea methane hydrate production test in a bid to prove the commercial viability of harnessing the import-dependent island’s indigenous offshore resources.
The test is led by Japan Oil Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) on behalf of the trade ministry (METI). The government aims to produce commercial volumes of methane hydrate by 2023-2027.
