India’s government announced this week it will fast-track 10 new nuclear units with a total capacity of 7 GW.
The government did not say when it expects the new pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWR) to come online, but according to the Nuclear Energy Agency, the average lead time to build a new nuclear plant is around five to seven years, not including the time required for permitting and licencing.
