The European Commission is seeking a mandate from EU member states to negotiate an international agreement with Russia over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, prompting a withering response from the Gazprom-owned project developer.
Brussels said it is seeking clarity over the terms governing how the 1,200-km subsea pipeline between Russia and Germany will be built and operated. Nord Stream 2 said there is “no need” for such an agreement as a “comprehensive legal framework” governing other import pipelines “is already in place”.
