Power markets in southern Africa have traditionally relied on coal to meet their needs, but a desire for cleaner energy has seen natural gas emerge as a preferred solution for reducing the region’s carbon emissions. Eager to introduce gas to its power mix, Namibia – famous for its epic desert landscapes and natural beauty – is developing a floating storage and regasification (FSRU) project in Walvis Bay. Chiraag Gokaldas, chief technical officer at Xaris, the company behind the planned LNG terminal, believes it can benefit not only Namibia, but also neighbouring countries. LNG Business Review spoke to him.
