In March 2015, Pakistan joined the club of LNG-importing nations when its first terminal, at Port Qasim near Karachi, began operations. It was a noteworthy event in several respects: not only was it Pakistan’s first taste of LNG, it was its first import of natural gas from any source – despite more than a decade of trying.
In terms of the period from the signing of the terminal contract to first gas flow, it was implemented in close to record time – 11 months – which was only possible with the utilisation of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), the Exquisite, provided by FSRU pioneer Excelerate Energy.
