Tensions are rising between Japan and China in disputed waters of the East China Sea after Tokyo protested renewed Chinese drilling activity in gas fields that were previously agreed to be jointly developed.
The contested gas fields straddle the median line claimed by Japan, leading Japanese leaders to worry that even if China built its drilling platforms on what Tokyo recognizes as Chinese-controlled waters, they could extract gas that sits under the Japanese side.
