Plans to build Germany’s first LNG terminal have risen from the ashes. On 18 July the European Commission approved a joint venture comprising German tank operator Oiltanking and Dutch companies Gasunie and Vopak – which jointly own the Gate LNG terminal in Rotterdam – that will perform a feasibility study for a 2-3 mtpa regas terminal near Hamburg.
Meanwhile, on 28 July Dutch LNG supplier PitPoint.LNG announced that it will build Germany’s first LNG bunkering facility in Cologne. With Rotterdam already offering LNG bunkering services, this will extend this up-and-coming segment’s reach well down the River Rhine (pictured above), western Europe’s busiest inland waterway and home to the world’s biggest inland port, Duisburg.
