This year the US will become a net exporter of gas for the first time since 1958. The continued growth in US shale gas production has virtually eliminated the need for imports and, in February 2016, the Lower 48 states began LNG exports from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility on the Gulf of Mexico.
With other new plants in this first wave of US export projects starting up soon, the US is expected to have the capacity to produce 70 mtpa of LNG by 2020 and should be the world’s third largest LNG producer behind Australia and Qatar.
