Last month Egypt announced a deal which would enable gas from Cyprus’ Aphrodite field to be fed into LNG plants in Egypt, securing a vital route to market and potentially unlocking the next step of development of East Mediterranean gas. Shortly afterwards, however, a dispute between Cyprus and Israel - over part of the Aphrodite structure that extends into Israeli waters -threatened to scupper the agreement. Aware of the significance of the Aphrodite field, regional governments are working to prevent the dispute blocking the deal with Egypt, but political cooperation in this highly volatile region is rarely a given.
