Renewable gas: death knell or lifeline?

As recently as 3 years ago, it was - almost - a truth universally acknowledged that anyone in search of a low carbon fuel simply needed to choose natural gas. “Acceptable, affordable and available” ran the mantra, as advocates highlighted gas’ low carbon credentials in comparison to coal. But as the reality of meeting the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) by 2040 starts to bite, gas has started to fall out of favour as a long-term destination fuel in a carbon constrained world. In its place, renewable gas threatens to usurp natural gas as the “acceptable” option, if not immediately “available” or “affordable”.
