European gas infrastructure is at a crossroad. On one hand, the decarbonisation agenda puts future gas demand growth in jeopardy, but on the other, Europe’s gas network has also proven a reliable – and indispensible - resource during demand peaks. These conflicting truths raise the question of how this resource is best maintained and leveraged for the future. For Brussels-based Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), a 69-member strong organisation which represents operators of transmission pipelines, storage facilities and LNG terminals from 25 countries, the question is existential. Gas Matters talks with GIE’s president, Jean-Marc Leroy, about the challenges of thriving in a market in transition, and the prospects for European infrastructure operators.
