The shale gas industry straddles a fissure in UK politics – on the one hand promising the kind of energy independence that would perfectly complement a post-Brexit world; on the other stoking intense controversy, including the recent resignation of the country's shale gas commissioner over what she described as "ridiculous" seismicity limits, and opposition from environmental lobby groups. Stuck in the middle of it all is Cuadrilla, the UK’s principle shale gas explorer. A recent court ruling dealt a fresh blow to UK shale gas prospects – but domestically produced energy could “slash gas import dependence” according to industry representative body UK Onshore Oil and Gas (UKOOG). In this exclusive interview, Cuadrilla CEO Francis Egan speaks to Gas Matters about the current status quo in UK shale and what it might take to realise the UK’s own “shale gale”.
