Delta Offshore Energy (DOE), the first ever fully private foreign energy infrastructure company in Vietnam, is developing a 3 GW LNG-to-power project in Vac Lieu province in the south of the country. With plans to begin construction in 2020, DOE’s project will be developed in phases, starting with an initial capacity of 750 MW and an LNG import target of 2.5 mtpa by the time full capacity is reached around 2026. According to Spencer White, Project Developer at DOE, this modular approach will be much cheaper than competing projects in Vietnam, allowing the project to grow concurrently with LNG demand in the country.
In this exclusive interview, White explains to LNG Business Review why Vietnam’s government is now keen to wean the country from an environmentally harmful reliance on coal for power generation and how LNG, in tandem with renewables, can help it achieve this goal and prevent power shortages in one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
