The surprise re-election of the coal-friendly Liberal-National Party (LNP) in Australia’s general election in May - one the pro-climate opposition Australian Labor Party was widely expected to win – has wide-ranging ramifications for the country’s gas industry. Australia was this year crowned the world’s largest LNG exporter, yet natural gas is now caught in the crosshairs of the contentious issues on which the election was fought - climate change, energy poverty and Australia’s economic dependence on coal.
