Until Covid-19, India’s natural gas consumption was seeing robust growth. But in March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a lockdown overnight to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, which immediately led to a steep fall in gas demand. This was bad news for the LNG industry because all the growth in India’s gas consumption since 2015 has been met by LNG.
Will the fall be short-lived? Or will lingering damage to the Indian economy slow or halt LNG import growth? Part one of a two-part series examines today’s drivers of gas demand in Asia’s third-largest economy and the world’s fourth-largest LNG importer.
