German LNG Terminal says it is aiming to take a final investment decision (FID) on its planned Brunsbüttel terminal by the end of the year. Yet, having already missed a 2019 FID deadline and with Germany already well supplied with gas at a time of historic low prices, industry experts speaking to LNG Business Review question the extent to which the German market needs an LNG terminal.
At the same time, market observers also doubt the extent to which the planned German LNG Terminal will be competitive against proposed LNG terminals by rival firms, particularly Uniper’s prospective floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Wilhelmshaven, as other planned terminals offer LNG sellers an alternative means of offloading supply, potentially for lower fees.
