EPA finally rescinds Obama’s methane rules, opening old schisms in US gas industry

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) yesterday reversed two Obama-era laws requiring oil and gas producers to limit operational methane emissions, in a controversial move intended to relieve the “regulatory burden” of leak monitoring on oil and gas companies. The rollback has been a long time coming and previously met resistance from oil majors including Equinor, BP, Shell and ExxonMobil, but were supported by US industry lobby groups representing smaller ‘mom and pop’ drillers.
