Leading the development and operation of world-class LNG facilities is considered to be a “big boy’s game”: the project leaders and operators have traditionally been from the ranks of the big oil companies. Yet the largest LNG development currently under construction – Cheniere’s 18 mtpa Sabine Pass facility – has no participation by majors. LNG Business Review takes a look at the reasons why the large oil companies have historically played such a dominant role in LNG, how others have succeeded without them, and whether those examples and developments in the LNG market mean more projects will be green-lit without the involvement of large oil companies.
