China’s biggest oil and gas producer PetroChina has discovered a “huge” 109 Bcm gas reservoir in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday. The discovery comes as China pushes forward with plans to increase domestic gas production in the face of rapidly rising demand – set to reach record highs of 320 Bcm by the end of 2020.
PetroChina said the discovery was made in the southern rim of China’s Junggar Basin, which lies in the north of Xinjiang province near the border with Kazakhstan. It is hoped that the 156 million sq m field will be capable of producing 610,000 cm/d of natural gas and 106.3 cm/d of oil.
