Argentina’s relationship with LNG has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride these past few years. Having switched from importer to (briefly) exporter of the fuel, the South American country, now faced with a shortage of domestic supply, is about to resume LNG imports in order to avoid a gas shortfall in the coming southern hemisphere winter.
While successive Argentinian governments have been keen to develop the country’s prolific Vaca Muerta shale gas resource to the extent that LNG imports are no longer needed, Gabriela Aguilar, vice president, South America, at floating technology innovator Excelerate Energy, strongly believes that domestic gas production and liquefaction can coexist with LNG imports in Argentina.
“One thing doesn’t exclude the other,” she tells LNG Business Review. “The difficulties Argentina faces have to do with the way it behaves in relation to the gas demand swings in the winter.”
