The government of Brazil has unveiled plans to privatise state-controlled power company Eletrobras, the largest utility in Latin America. The company owns and operates a third of Brazil’s generation capacity and much of the country’s transmission and distribution network.
Eletrobras said the mechanics of the sale – which could raise USD 3.8-6.3 billion towards plugging Brasilia’s reported USD 50 billion public spending deficit – need to be defined by central government and regulatory agencies.
