The Iraqi parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of ex-Iraqi oil minister Hussain Shahristani as the new deputy prime minister for energy. His promotion is likely to be well received by international oil and gas companies operating in Iraq as it assures that contracts signed over the last 18 months will be honoured, even if, in the ongoing absence of a new hydrocarbons law, they cannot be legally ratified.
