Marcellus shale tax proposal slammed by industry as 'threat to commercial edge'

A fresh tax on Marcellus shale drilling, along with proposed changes to the drilling permit approval process, have managed to rile both the shale industry and environmental lobby in Pennsylvania, where the legislation has passed the Republican-controlled state Senate.

The legislation – which now faces the state House of Representatives – is intended to soften the blow of an increased tax on the shale industry by speeding up the permitting process. It comes as Pennsylvania aims to plug a USD 2.8 billion budget deficit for the 2017 financial year.
