On 24 November 2015, a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 attack aircraft flying through Syrian airspace – approaching the border with Turkey – was warned several times by the Turkish Air Force to change course. Whether it ever violated Turkish airspace remains a matter of dispute between Turkey, the US and Russia; either way, at 09:24 it was hit by a sidewinder missile from a patrolling Turkish F-16 fighter jet. Both pilots ejected. One was rescued, the other killed.
