PGNiG’s formal notification to Russia on 15 November of its intention to terminate imports of Russian pipeline gas from the end of 2022 is the culmination of years of frustration. Poland’s majority state-owned oil and gas company plans to rely in future on a combination of LNG imports, pipeline gas imports from Norway via the proposed Baltic Pipe, and its own domestic production to meet the country’s gas needs, freeing itself entirely from dependence on Russia. Longer term, Poland sees itself as an LNG trader and gas hub, exporting regasified LNG to its neighbours, as PGNiG continues to build a large LNG contract portfolio. It is, however, a strategy not without risk.
