LNG shipping is facing a shortage of skilled officers. The sector’s accelerated growth on the back of the LNG industry’s rapid expansion, allied to shifting career expectations and values among its recruitment pool, have made it challenging for shipping companies to recruit talent, especially on a senior level, both onshore and at sea.
The segment has been there before. Once again, a great part of the solution lies in planning ahead and stepping up training. However, this time around the skills shortage is also driving shipowners to implement changes which they hope will make a career in LNG shipping not only appealing to a new generation of digital-savvy recruits, but also more attractive than any other commercial maritime sector.
